The ECE R129 (i-Size) regulation, implemented in 2013, is the most recent safety regulation for the manufacture of child car seats. Its objective is to facilitate the installation of seats, improve protection against side impacts, and promote the prolonged use of rear-facing seats, considered the safest mode of transport. ECE R129 (i-Size) seats represent the most modern and safe standard, gradually replacing the previous ECE R44/04 standards.

What are the advancements in technology?

The R129 regulation, introduced in 2013, seeks to increase travel safety for babies and children. It is more recent than the ECE R44 standard, including more detailed tests to improve head and neck protection, as well as new side-impact tests in crash test development. The R44.04 regulation establishes tests at 32 mph for frontal impact and 18 mph for rear impact, while R129 introduces a new side-impact test at 15 mph. R129 replaces the P-dummies, with 4 sensors, with Q-dummies, with 32 sensors, providing a deeper analysis of data in crash simulations. These additional sensors also measure data from the neck, abdomen, and head in the tests.

Differences between the two models

R129 restraints are identified by a generally orange label showing R129 at the top, also mentioned in the user manual. Labels on R129 car seats usually indicate the appropriate sizes in cm.

The choice of seat is based on the child's height, not their weight, which is safer as parents usually know the height better than the child's weight. This makes it easier to ensure that the child is in the correct size seat.

It is considered the safest standard with better head and neck protection.

Side impact test results are evaluated as part of the standard.

i-Size car seats require the use of ISOFIX, which connects the seat directly to the car's chassis. ISOFIX seats are more likely to be installed correctly in the vehicle. Note that you will need an additional ISOFIX base to install a baby car seat using ISOFIX.

Is my car compatible with the i-Size car seat?

i-Size child car seats fit in vehicles that have ISOFIX anchor points, but you should still check if the seat is approved for your car. This step is essential to ensure compatibility and safety. View Car Compatibility Fitting List
